Salt consumption

Salt, together with sugar, claims the title of "white death". And this is true, because 14% of deaths in the world are caused by high blood pressure. And some of them are related to the excessive consumption of table salt.

We consume about 70% of salt in ready-made products that we buy in supermarkets. So, which prepared foods have the most salt?

The top four are:

 bread;

 processed meat products;

 hard cheese;

canned goods and semi-finished products.

WHO recommends reducing salt intake to 5 grams per day, which is one teaspoon without a top. The latest study of the nutrition of Ukrainians provides disappointing data: on average, we consume three times more salt. What is the benefit of limiting the consumption of table salt?

The first is to prevent blood pressure from rising.

The second is the reduction of the already high blood pressure in the vessels.

The third is a significant reduction in the risk of complications caused by high blood pressure.

So what to do?

1) Limit your intake of processed foods that are staples

a supplier of salt – bread, processed meat and fish products, hard cheese, canned goods and semi-finished products;

2) read labels! The closer to the beginning of the ingredient list

the salt is located, the greater its content.

3) When cooking at home, use less salt and more spices and herbs.

4) Use iodized salt instead of ordinary salt.

Therefore, it is not necessary to give up salt completely, but it is very critical to limit its consumption to 5 grams per day, and this includes the salt hidden in processed foods. Lviv Laboratory Center Lviv Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine
