In the event of an emergency or power outage, you should be aware of the important rules and conditions for storing breast milk.
If possible, BEFORE the expected power outage, move all expressed breast milk to the back of the freezer (the coldest part) and make sure the freezer is full or empty spaces are filled with crumpled newspaper to reduce air flow.
After a power outage, do not open the refrigerator and freezer doors for a long time.
A refrigerator without power keeps food for up to 4 hours, if you do not open the door.
The unpowered freezer will store food for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if the freezer is half full), provided you do not open the door.
Milk is still considered frozen if ice crystals are visible in it.
Once the milk is thawed, it must be used within 2 hours and cannot be refrozen.
The main rule of safe storage of breast milk: if you have the slightest doubt about the quality of the milk or the storage conditions, do not use it.
